while the red bull music academy was investigating tokyo as a next possible location for their famed educational program, the tragedy of the march 11 quake and tsunami struck. their response was a series of free events and a large-format a3-sized publication.
reflecting on the meaning of ‘play,’ the identity was born out of musical notation that is rearranged for pure amusement. taking the same spirited approach in a contrasting direction, the newsprint layout adheres to a strict block-based grid, in reference to sequencer software used in modern music production, which forms a canvas to render visual rhythms and cadences within the flow of text and images.
