red bull, japan

while red bull music academy was investigating tokyo as a next possible location for their famed educational program, the tragedy of the march 11 quake and tsunami struck. their response was a series of free events and a large-format a3-sized publication.

reflecting on the meaning of ‘play,’ the identity was born out of traditional musical notation that is rearranged for pure amusement. taking the same spirited approach in a contrasting direction, the newsprint layout adheres to a strict block-based grid, in reference to sequencer software used in modern music production, which forms a canvas to render visual rhythms and cadences within the flow of text and images.

high up on the 52nd floor of the esteemed roppongi hills mori tower is a large observation space that was transformed into a daytime cafe and evening lounge. due to the expense of the venue itself, the print production budget was minimal. working within restrictions, the simple high-contrast of black and white was utilized, as well as a choice selection of colored craft papers hand cut and assembled into menus.

the creation of objects of interaction for people is still a fascination. working with a fellow ex-nokian, product designer ti el attar, we put together a quick mobile phone concept for the ‘practical category’ of a fujitsu design competition. this is very indicative of the type of work done previously at nokia design, the vast majority of which is covered by non-disclosure agreement and cannot be shown.

in co-creative direction with arya senboutaraj, leading a ragtag band of designers, directors and animators, we pitched against ten other top-tier studios for the network branding job of the decade and won. working in startup-mode, we delivered a full cable network branding collection, as well as complete show packages for each of the twelve launch programs, to help create the first video game tv network.

diversity and disorder were promoted to make each show package as distinctive as possible. yet, as we were in a very unique position creating every single graphic element from scratch, we devised a system to bind all the shows together in a never-done-before network icon framework. another notable departure from the typical network package was the use of “micro bumpers” - five second interstitial breaks that could be placed at random inside commercial blocks.

nikon created a promotional site called “nikon next” as part of a multinational brand renovation pilot project. i was brought in to create titles for a unique three-part video piece that is part of the site. as the foundational underpinning of the existing branding’s visual identity is light, the titles and proposed endtag build upon this in a more organic and modern manifestation.

kontacto east ltd., japan

a music website focused on non-mainstream artists and completely honest non-sponsored release reviews. as the online site is the only presentation of the content, a seemingly dynamic logotype was devised which is randomly loaded per page. letter construction is made from slices of sound waves - the most basic building blocks of music, and also formally related to synthesis (most of the covered music genres are electronica based).

one subtle design invention - since the image content is fairly random in terms of color and quality, a large color palette was created which is then randomly applied to dividers to increase the colorfield. with this, the site appears to imitate and integrate the visual content rather than fight against it.

an excellent example of concept design work. to generate rich experience-based input, a probe kit was created; a set of tasks with tools to complete them sent out to selected participants across the globe. after analyzing returned kits, other research reports, and a workshop, our core team came up with new concepts dealing with location and places on a mobile device. these were developed into eight scenarios which were visualized working with an illustrator.

the final distributable for the project became a 256 page tome, which allows the reader a prolonged experience with the depth of our discovery, as well as permits a long-lasting influence on those developing and implementing nokia's product & services strategies.

being a foundational piece of nokia’s location services program, as well as dealing mainly with the urban environment, the book itself resembles a solid wedge of concrete. to reflect the process, as well as to save on cost, the first part of the book dealing with the research investigations is printed in black and white on colored paper, with the resulting vision presented after in full color.

hoping to attract a broader audience, the new national theatre, tokyo, decided to create a full english language season guide. though they requested to have an old european feel, a more befitting fusion between the modern and classic was proposed. the already established color identity was utilized to further differentiate sections of the booklet.
